Know Your Historic House--From Second Empire to Queen Anne

This particular session will focus on the Queen Anne, Shingle Style, Second Empire, and Stick styles, but will also make the point that regardless of style, most old houses have similar needs as far as care.

11am: Common Challenges in Maintaining and Preserving a Historic Home, with Rob Cagnetta, Founder of Heritage Restoration

1pm: Downtown Walking Tour of Bristol's Queen Anne, Shingle, Stick, and Second Empire style-houses, with David Andreozzi, of Andreozzi Architecture

David Andreozzi, past Bristol Historic District Chairperson, founded Andreozzi Architecture in 1987 specializing in a modern evolution of traditional and classical residential architecture. Shingle style, traditional, and classical commissions exist shores throughout New England to the Bahamian Islands. Completed projects have won multiple AIA awards and have been featured in over seventy books, magazines, and newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, House Beautiful, Ocean Home, Traditional Building, Yankee Magazine, Period Homes, Old House, ICAA Classicist, New England Home, and many others. 

A graduate of Roger Williams University's Historic Preservation Program, Rob Cagnetta has built a career rooted in hands-on craftsmanship and preservation leadership. Early in his career, he apprenticed in the trades before becoming Director of the Institute for Preservation Training (IPT) at Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island. An Askins Achievement Award recipient, Rob serves as President of Heritage Restoration, Inc., Vice President of Sutherland Welles, LTD, and Chair of the South Kingstown Zoning Board. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to preserving historic buildings, elevating craftsmanship, and supporting thoughtful, sustainable community development.

Award-winning architectural historian Catherine W. Zipf studies the underdogs (and the elites when they were underdogs) of American architectural history. With an interest in race and gender, Zipf reconstructs lost or overlooked histories, providing a new, often surprising, viewpoint on the traditional narrative. Recent projects include Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, a book that examines Wright's career before the construction of Fallingwater, and The Architecture of the Negro Travelers' Green Book, a public catalogue of Green Book sites. Zipf serves as the Executive Director of The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society, in Bristol, RI.
