Description
They called it the last house on the block: a nonprofit rehab on the edge of Koreatown where men landed after every other program, every second chance, and every person who loved them had run out. Chris Jensen arrived there with one suitcase, no car, and a remarkable talent for getting high at exactly the wrong moment.
Over the next two years, Chris scrubbed rehab bathrooms, relapsed in a pair of fuzzy Rite Aid slippers during a torrential downpour, and ended up managing a sober living house just as the pandemic turned Los Angeles upside down. Along the way, he met the people who carried him when he couldn’t carry himself, and lost some who couldn’t stay.
Adapted from six essays first published on Substack, Last House on the Block is funny, unsparing, and finally hopeful, a portrait of recovery as something built one ordinary day at a time. It isn’t a musical, but music runs all through it: an original piano score by Becky Moonitz sets the mood beneath the story, and two vocalists step in and out as the people who populated those years, singing fragments of the songs that drifted down hallways and out of car radios while all of it was happening.
Directed by Troy Nickerson, Last House on the Block is the first original production from Theater on the Verge, following its sold-out run of regional premieres.
