Session 6 — Building Your Team

Launch Pad 2027: Workshops for Working Musicians

The goal isn’t to do everything yourself forever. It’s to understand your career well enough to know when - and who - to bring onto the team.

Our final Launch Pad 2027 workshop brings the season together with a look at what happens when an independent artist is ready to grow beyond a one-person operation.

Throughout Launch Pad, we’ve worked from a simple philosophy: artists should be empowered to become arbiters of their own careers. Understanding booking, promotion, live production, contracts, sustainability and the business behind your music doesn’t mean you need to personally handle every one of those things forever. In fact, eventually, you probably shouldn’t.

It means that when the time comes to hand something off, you understand what you’re handing over.

In Building Your Team, we’ll map out the people who can become part of an artist’s career at different stages — from band members, photographers, designers, roadies and sound technicians to managers, booking agents, publicists, producers, accountants, lawyers, publishers, distributors and record labels.

We’ll look at what these people actually do, what they don’t do, how they’re commonly paid, when it might make sense to bring them aboard, and some recommended pathways for finding and developing those professional relationships.

We’ll also talk about the artist’s responsibility as the team grows. How do you communicate expectations? How do you delegate without losing control of your vision? What should be put in writing? How do you recognize when a relationship isn’t working? And perhaps most importantly: what parts of your career are you actually ready to give away?

Our guest mentor (TBA) will join host Dan Tait to offer another perspective on building and maintaining a professional music-industry team.

Because this workshop draws on many of the skills covered throughout Launch Pad 2027, we strongly recommend attending at least one other Launch Pad workshop before joining this session. We’ll be pulling together concepts from booking, festival applications, live production, sustainability and contracts as we build a roadmap for what might come next.

Come prepared to take stock of where your career is now — and where you’d like it to go. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of the people who could help you get there, what you should expect from them, and what they should expect from you.

You don’t need a team to begin building a career. But when you’re ready to build one, you should know what you’re building.

Real tools. Real conversations. Get ready for 2027.
