Session 5 — Contract Writing for Artists
Launch Pad 2027: Workshops for Working Musicians
You agreed on the gig. You shook hands. Everyone seems happy. Now put it in writing.
Contract Writing for Artists returns to Launch Pad with a practical look at the less glamorous - but crucially important - administrative side of working professionally in music.
This workshop is designed especially for self-represented and independent artists who are regularly making agreements with venues, presenters, festivals, collaborators and other industry professionals without a manager or agent handling the paperwork for them.
Together, we’ll break down the anatomy of a straightforward performance agreement: who’s responsible for what, payment terms, deposits, cancellation policies, hospitality, production requirements, merchandise, promotion, timelines, and the other details worth agreeing on before show day.
We’ll also look beyond the basic gig contract and explore some of the other agreements artists may encounter as their careers grow — including booking and representation agreements, recording and collaboration agreements, licensing considerations, and other common music-industry contracts.
The goal isn’t to turn anyone into a lawyer. It’s to help artists become more confident readers, writers and negotiators of the agreements they encounter — including recognizing when something deserves a closer look or when it’s time to get professional legal advice.
We’ll also touch on some of the other paperwork that comes with being self-employed in music: invoicing, deposits, record keeping, expenses, GST considerations and some basic Canadian tax know-how.
A guest mentor (TBA) will join host Dan Tait to bring additional professional perspective to the conversation.
Monday, November 16 · 5–8pm
Apple Blossom Room — The Bloc Creative Campus

Bring your laptop — and if you have an existing contract template you’re comfortable working with, bring that too. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the paperwork behind the gig and practical tools for running the business side of your music more confidently.
This workshop provides general educational information based on music-industry experience and is not legal, accounting or tax advice. For questions specific to your circumstances, consult an appropriate qualified professional.
Real tools. Real conversations. Get ready for 2027.
