Session 3 — Sound Craft for Performers

Launch Pad 2027: Workshops for Working Musicians

You arrive at the gig. There’s a PA. There’s a mixer. There are monitors. There is absolutely nobody there to run any of it.

Now what?

The third session of Launch Pad 2027 is an extended, hands-on workshop designed to give working performers the basic live-sound skills to set up, troubleshoot and mix a gig — and to communicate confidently when there is a sound tech behind the board.

Joining host Dan Tait is guest mentor Hailey Allen, a local sound technician who has worked with a number of venues and live events throughout the Okanagan.

During the first half of the workshop, we’ll get our hands on several types of commonly encountered live-sound equipment. We’ll cover signal flow, microphones and DIs, connecting a PA, mixer basics, gain staging, EQ, monitor mixes, feedback prevention, and some simple troubleshooting for when something inevitably isn’t working.

Most importantly, this won’t just be a presentation. We’re plugging things in. We’re sliding faders. We’re making sound.

After dinner, we’ll move onto a professional live-sound system and put the other side of the skill set into practice: the sound check.

Each participating artist will have an opportunity to go through a real sound check and practice communicating what they need onstage... Learning to ask for what you actually want in your wedge, how to describe a problem you’re hearing, how to work collaboratively with a technician, and how to get comfortable asking for adjustments without needing to speak fluent sound-engineer.

Whether you’re playing a winery with a little analog mixer, walking into a venue with a digital console, or showing up somewhere that simply points toward a pile of cables and says “the PA’s over there,” the goal is to leave you considerably more comfortable with what you’re looking at.

Monday, November 2 · 5–9pm
The Stage Studio — The Bloc Creative Campus
2041 Harvey Ave, Kelowna, BC

Please note the extended four-hour workshop time. We’ve given this session an extra hour because of its hands-on format.

Admission is $65 per workshop, or grab a Launch Pad 2027 Season Pass and attend all six workshops for $300.

Dinner is included! A vegan-friendly meal will be prepared for you by your host, Dan Tait.

Bring an instrument if you play one, bring your questions, and come prepared to make some noise. You’ll leave with a better understanding of the gear between your performance and your audience - and more confidence whether you’re running the sound yourself or working with the person who is.

Real tools. Real conversations. Get ready for 2027.
