Meet the Expert: Dr. Roy

Geologist, Retired Professor, and Longtime Museum Volunteer

Dr. Roy brings a wealth of experience in geology, education, and science communication to the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals.

Roy earned his Bachelor of Science in Geology from Arizona State University, where he focused on ore deposits, geochemistry, and volcanology. His graduate research included innovative computer modeling of volcanic activity—incorporating eruptive forces, wind patterns, and ballistics—which later evolved into a NASA-funded HiRes 3D modeling project.

He holds a Master’s Degree in School Administration and Organizational Studies and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and Policy Studies, both from ASU. His doctoral research examined the impact of tax models and compensatory weights on school finance equity in Arizona.

Roy spent nearly two decades as a science educator at Gilbert High School, and from 1991 to 2000, he served as an independent contractor for the Arizona Foundation for Resource Education (AFRE), designing and leading workshops for K–12 teachers across the state.

He later became a Professor of Geology at Maricopa Community Colleges, where he taught geology, managed the geology program, supported part-time faculty, and helped lead campus-wide academic assessment and credentialing initiatives. Roy is now retired from the classroom but continues to share his deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Earth sciences.

As a dedicated museum volunteer, Roy will lead two exclusive, members-only workshops during Mystery Mineral Day. In these sessions, he’ll teach participants how to use the Mohs Hardness Scale, empowering them with the tools and techniques to begin identifying minerals on their own.

Whether you're bringing in your own specimens or joining Roy's workshop, you'll benefit from the expertise of a passionate educator and scientist who has spent a lifetime helping others understand the world beneath their feet.
