Harry Somers wrote five piano sonatas over his lifetime. In 2026, Piano Lunaire presents the complete cycle and what’s more: we have commissioned five living Canadian composers to write new companion works, one for each sonata. Five world premiere “nanoSONATA’s” are going to be presented in Toronto and Montreal.
Five “nanoSONATAs” will make their world premiere in Montreal. Launched on October 15, 2026, this project creates a vibrant dialogue between the past, present, and future of music in Canada.
Piano Lunaire is partnering with CMC Québec and the Canadian League of Composers to bring this exciting event to Canada’s two largest cities. Today, it is essential to develop the Canadian musical language and celebrate our heritage. Harry Somers is considered by many to be one of Canada’s most gifted, dynamic, and unique composers.
The Montreal premiere of SONATA PENTAD will take place on Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m. (Sonatas Nos. 1, 2 and ) and at 4:30 p.m. (Sonatas Nos. 4, and 5) at Espace Kendergi at CMC Québec, 2142 Crescent Street, Montreal, Quebec. All seats are on a first-come, first-served basis: $25 for both recitals. Admission is free for students. Attend one recital or both—it’s up to you!

*World premiere
With a particular focus on Canada’s musical heritage, Piano Lunaire has launched the centennial-based Somers Sonata Pentad Project in 2026, highlighting the piano sonatas of Harry Somers, one of Canada’s most important composers and a foundational voice in the development of this country’s own musical lineage. We celebrate Somers’ legacy through performances of his five sonatas, alongside five newly commissioned companion works by living Canadian composers. These world premieres will honour Canada’s musical heritage while contributing to the new repertory for future generations of artists and audiences.
