Please join IES MSP for a "Light Pollution: Causes, Impacts, Solutions" program on Tuesday, February 11 from 4:30-6:30 pm featuring Todd Burlet of Starry Skies North.
The program will begin with a brief introduction to Starry Skies North, followed by a review of the current state of light pollution and its growth, and an introduction to dark sky certification programs available in Minnesota. These will be followed by a review of some of the key impacts of light pollution on the residents and ecosystems of Minnesota, including Minnesota’s seniors, a review of recent studies on skyglow, and a discussion of available dark sky-friendly sustainable lighting resources, including DLC-Luna and ROLAN
Learning objectives:
- Learn about Starry Skies North and free outreach services
- Learn about the current state of light pollution in Minnesota
- Learn how light pollution impacts the health and wellness of Minnesotans, especially seniors
- Learn about the challenges of holding the line on skyglow during the transition to LED’s
- Learn what dark sky certifications are available in Minnesota
- Be introduced to the DLC-Luna program and DarkSky International’s ROLAN initiative

Featured speaker:
Todd Burlet is a Delegate of DarkSky International, Co-Founder, Board Member, and President of Starry Skies North, the Minnesota chapter of DarkSky International, and is a member of the American Astronomical Association and the Society for Light and Lighting. Todd is a retired Staff Engineer and Engineering Manager whose 37-year career in the aerospace industry spanned commercial, military, and space programs. Todd holds a BA in Physics from St. Olaf College. Todd is a lifelong amateur astronomer and photographer, and when he’s not advocating for dark skies he enjoys canoeing, biking, and scuba diving.
