What happens when we truly listen—not just to the music, but to the words that inspired it?

Listen invites audiences to experience choral music in a new way by focusing first on the words that inspire it. How does hearing a text before it is sung change our experience of the music? How do composers use melody, harmony, rhythm, and silence to deepen the meaning of a poem or prayer?

Before the concert, Sr. Delores Dufner, OSB—a prolific hymn text writer and member of the Sisters of Saint Benedict—will join Rev. Leah Rosso, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sartell, and Aaron Carpenter, artistic director of the St. John's Boys' Choir, for a conversation exploring the relationship between words and music, the art of listening, and how the choirboys prepared to bring these texts to life.

Throughout the performance, Rev. Rosso will read each text before it is sung, inviting audiences to hear familiar and unfamiliar words with fresh ears. Audience members will also have opportunities to move to different seating locations, experiencing how changing perspective transforms both the sound of the choir and the way the music is received.

The St. John's Boys' Choir

Now in its 45th season, the St. John’s Boys’ Choir continues the tradition of enabling boys to express themselves through music and provides an environment that nurtures and encourages creativity. Founded in 1981 by Br. Paul Richards and the Saint John’s monastic community, the organization has grown to include four choral ensembles which perform more than fifty engagements annually. Members of the choir represent home, public, and private schools in more than fifteen communities around Central Minnesota.
