Description
For centuries, snow and glaciers have shaped life in the Alps, fueling mountain culture, local communities, and winter tourism. Today, that snow is vanishing at an unprecedented rate as temperatures across the region climb.
Rather than focusing solely on what is being lost, Lost Snows of the Alps turns its attention to the people responding to a changing mountain landscape. The film follows scientists, mountain guides, athletes, and conservation groups such as Protect Our Winters as they work to raise awareness, understand the changes underway, and advocate for a more sustainable future.
The film is by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin McCarey, whose work has appeared on National Geographic Channel, PBS, NBC, and the Turner Networks. His career includes work on the Peabody Award-winning series Portrait of America and some twenty films for National Geographic, covering subjects from giant squid to the lions of the Kalahari. Kevin currently teaches Environmental Filmmaking at the Savannah College of Art and Design and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Marine Sanctuaries in 2017 for his work as an oceanographer, filmmaker, and author.
