Description
Madwewetoon, which translates to “make it sound” in Ojibwe, is a celebration of Indigenous arts and culture in Northern Ontario.
The show will feature a performance by Thea May, from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and signed to Ishkode Records. Her powerful voice and unapologetic honesty invite listeners to connect and find strength in shared pain. Also performing at the festival will be Mi`kmaq singer-songwriter Drives the Common Man, who crafts a spellbinding fusion of alternative pop that's both nostalgic and groundbreaking, Mohawk and French-Canadian singer-songwriter James N. Wilson, and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Naponse.
Madwewetoon is a collaboration between the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) and Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI). These organizations previously joined forces to successfully produce Ottawa’s Minoshkite Indigenous Music & Arts Festival in 2024 and 2025, and will be returning in 2026.
In addition to the musical performances, DWF and CMI will facilitate a workshop led by one of the artists at a Legacy School in Sudbury. Through the Legacy Schools program DWF provides free resources to educators and youth group leaders to help them teach not only the true history of Canada, but also the richness, strength, and resilience of Indigenous cultures. The program also connects students with Indigenous artists, Knowledge Keepers, experts, and more through opportunities like this workshop.
We acknowledge that Sudbury is located on the traditional lands of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, with the Greater City of Sudbury encompassing the traditional lands of the Wahnapitae First Nation. We honour and respect the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land for thousands of years and continue to contribute to the rich cultural fabric of this region.
Madwewetoon is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund.
ALL AGES.
