UK-born and Edmonton-based, troubadour Martin Kerr has always believed that songs can change the world. Long known for his heartfelt storytelling, poetic lyrics, and the ability to stop a crowd in its tracks with just his voice and a guitar, Kerr has recently emerged as one of Canada’s most vital protest singers — using his art to confront injustice while offering hope in dark times.

“I just try to be authentic and say what’s really on my mind,” he explains. “Sometimes that means helping people grieve, sometimes it’s making them laugh, and sometimes it’s challenging them to rise up. But I always want to leave people with hope.”

That spirit drives his bold new protest album, Overdue for a Revolution, a collection of original songs and viral parody rewrites that tackle the defining issues of our age. From ICE raids (“Immigrants”), to runaway inequality (“Workers (Can’t Afford a Home)”), to the need for solidarity and unity in divided times (“Overdue for a Revolution” and “Can’t We All Get Along?”), Kerr’s songs cut to the core with rare honesty and compassion. Even playful tracks like “Thank God For Taxes” carry a deeper message, inviting listeners to rethink what kind of society we want to build together.

The album also includes powerful reinterpretations of classics, rewritten as razor-sharp commentaries on war, fascism, genocide, and corporate greed. First shared on his social media channels — where his mix of protest songs, parodies, and words of encouragement have found a global audience — these tracks resonated so strongly online that Kerr expanded them into full recordings for the record.

His evolution into a protest songwriter feels like a natural extension of a career built on human connection. From his early days busking on Edmonton street corners, to cracking the Canadian Top 10 with Better Than Brand-New, to racking up millions of streams with songs like You’re Amazing, Kerr has always followed his heart rather than industry trends. Even during the pandemic, when live music shut down, he became a lifeline for his community by performing more than 400 “Stay Home Street Concerts” — possibly more than any other artist in the world.

Like all good stories, this is a story rooted in love.

The seeds of this story were planted way back in the 1970's, when I, Lalita, moved to Kaleden and met the Hayter family. As a youth I would love, laugh, dance, sing, and play on these lands with the Hayter cousins Kris and Myron, eating Grandma Hayters cinnamon toast after school. This family would take over my heart.

Life would happen and we would lose the Hayter cousins at a young age. Grief would move my feet to travel, but eventually these feet would bring me back home to raise my own family.

To return a lifetime later to these lands and these beautiful people completes a circle in my life, full bloom.

It is my honor to be given the opportunity to operate Frog City Cafe with my husband and hold space for love, laughter, dancing, singing, and playing.
