Earlier in the day, Kyle will lead a hands-on Water Elm bonsai workshop from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Workshop registration includes a tree for each participant, and the Cape Fear Bonsai Society will provide wire. The workshop is listed as a separate event, and silent observers are welcome.
Our May program features Kyle Purvis of Honey Hill Bonsai Growers, presenting Southeastern Trees for Bonsai.
Many excellent bonsai species grow naturally in the southeastern United States. In this presentation, Kyle will discuss trees that thrive in our regional climate and how they can be developed into compelling bonsai. Topics will include species selection, collecting material, and practical approaches to developing southeastern trees for bonsai.
Kyle Purvis operates Honey Hill Bonsai Growers near Charleston, South Carolina, where he collects, field-grows, and develops bonsai and pre-bonsai material suited to southeastern growers. The coastal plain climate of the Charleston region is very similar to the Cape Fear area, making his experience especially relevant for local bonsai enthusiasts.
Kyle will highlight several species that adapt particularly well to bonsai in the Southeast, including bald cypress, yaupon holly, wax myrtle, live oak, red maple, and other species well suited to our coastal climate.
Whether you are just getting started or have been practicing bonsai for years, this presentation is a great opportunity to learn about species that perform well in our climate and landscape.
Members and guests are welcome to bring a tree or photos of a tree they are working on if they would like informal advice or species suggestions during the meeting.
Join us for an informative afternoon of bonsai discussion and learning with fellow enthusiasts.
