Description

Join Providence Art Club gallery manager Michael Rose for an exclusive tour of the organization’s Clubhouse on Thursday, February 13 at 5:30pm. Built as a private home for Seril Dodge in 1790, the building was retrofitted to become a gallery and social space for the young Art Club in 1886. Today, it continues to house the Club’s main public gallery space, its café for members, and its bar. Attendees will receive a tour of spaces that are typically reserved for members and their guests. This is also an opportunity to peruse shows on view that will feature works by Richard V. King, Jens Retlev, as well as Jane Timken, a solo show of street photographer Izzy Rodriguez, and a group exhibition featuring some of the Club’s newest members. After the tour, guests are invited to join Michael for drinks in the Club’s Angell’s Lane Bar.

Founded in 1880 to stimulate interest in art culture in the City of Providence and beyond, the Art Club is one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation and the first such Club to be co-founded by women and men. It also counts noted African American artist Edward Mitchell Bannister among its founders. Situated in four historic buildings on Thomas Street, the Club is home to three public galleries, two studio classrooms, social spaces for members, and fifteen private artists’ studios. For over 140 years, the Club has been elevating the power of art in the community. Its galleries are always free and open to the public.

Michael Rose is an art gallerist and writer based in Providence. The gallery manager of the Art Club since 2014, Michael also writes the popular weekly “Inside Art” column for local news site GoLocalProv.com, profiling artists around the state. He has given tours and talks about the Art Club for numerous affinity groups including those of Harvard Art Museums, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The Decorative Arts Trust among others. He earned a BA in Art History from Providence College and a Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts from New York University.
