Tenacity & Resilience: The Art of Jerry Pinkney Honoring the work of Jerry Pinkney (1939-2021), Tenacity & Resilience: The Art of Jerry Pinkney features more than seventy illustrations, dummy books, and working drawings from seven children’s books from 1993 to 2020. The works encompass issues of social justice, resilience, and tenacity in the face of adversity. They convey powerful messages related to the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America as well as personal tales of courage and aspiration. The range of works reveals Pinkney’s multifaceted talents as an inspired master watercolorist, draftsman, and storyteller.
The books represented in this show include Minty (1996), a story of Harriet Tubman in her youth, and A Place to Land: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Speech that Inspired a Nation (2019). Works from the following children’s books are also featured: I Want to Be (1993); Goin’ Someplace Special (2001); God Bless the Child (2004); Sweethearts of Rhythm (2009); and The Little Mermaid (2020).
Tenacity & Resilience: The Art of Jerry Pinkney was organized by Gail Stavitsky, Chief Curator, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, New Jersey. A Sense of Community: Celebrating Jerry Pinkney's Legacy In the KMA’s Spot Gallery and Learning Center, A Sense of Community: Celebrating Jerry Pinkney’s Legacy explores Pinkney’s role as a mentor to, and model for, artists and illustrators of color. It includes the work of nine contemporary illustrators—Charnelle Pinkney Barlow, Elbrite Brown, Bryan Collier, Gordon C. James, Oge Mora, Brian Pinkney, James E. Ransome, Shadra Strickland, and Eric Velasquez—who are, like Pinkney, dedicated to making children’s literature more inclusive and diverse. The exhibition will be co-curated by James E. Ransome, who was Pinkney’s close friend and mentee, and is himself a well-regarded artist and illustrator.

Jerry Pinkney was one of America’s most admired children’s book illustrators. He won the Caldecott Medal and five Caldecott Honors, five Coretta Scott King Awards, and the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, among many other honors. In addition to being a friend to the Katonah Museum of Art, he was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees and IDEA committee and featured in exhibitions The Pinkneys: An Award-Winning Family of Artists and Writers (1999), Masters of Paper and Paint: The Art of Eric Carle and Jerry Pinkney (2002), Children Should be Seen: The Image of the Child in American Picture-Book Art (2007), Storied City: New York City in Picture Book Art (2011), Artist to Artist: 23 Major Illustrators talk to Children about their Art (2013), and Illustrated Animals in Conversation (2019).
Visiting the Katonah Museum of Art
The Katonah Museum of Art is pleased to welcome its members and the public to its galleries and grounds. The KMA is committed to keeping you healthy and safe. To help prepare for your visit, please review the policies and other useful information below to help ensure your safety, the quality of your visit, and the security of the art on display. Admission and Hours
- Advance tickets are recommended.
- Select the date you will be visiting the Museum and arrive any time up to 30 minutes before closing
- Please present your confirmation email either printed or on your phone at the Guest Services Desk
- Katonah Museum of Art members are suggested to reserve tickets, but there will be no charge. Please note: KMA Members will be asked to show their membership card for verification upon arrival.
- Visitors are required to adhere to the Visitor Code of Conduct (see below) and to follow Visitor Etiquette (see below).
- Please include Name, E-mail Address and Phone Number for all Attendees at check out. This information will be used for contact tracing.
- Upon checking out, please make sure to leave your browser open until you receive a confirmation that your order has been processed. If you do not receive this message or a confirmation e-mail, your order has not been processed.
Visitor Code of Conduct
By reserving your timed ticket, you agree to adhere to the Visitor Code of Conduct and to play your part in keeping the Museum safe for both visitors and staff.
Health and Safety
- Indoors, masks are recommended for everyone over age 2, regardless of vaccination status.
- Outdoors, masks are optional for all.
- Hand sanitizer is available for your use when you enter the Museum and in the public areas.
- If you are not feeling well or have been in close proximity to someone with COVID, please do not come to the Museum. (If you become ill after purchasing a ticket, please contact the Museum to reschedule your visit.)
- The contact information you provided when purchasing your ticket will be used if we need to notify you of any COVID-19 exposure. Likewise, should you become ill with COVID-19 following your visit, please notify the Museum as soon as possible.
- Please maintain six feet between yourself, other visitors, and Museum staff.

Our members and frequent visitors to the Katonah Museum of Art will be familiar with the following rules, designed to make your visit enjoyable and to protect the artwork, as well as our guests. Please help us by following these guidelines.
- Please keep a distance of at least three feet from the artworks. Do not touch any artwork at any time
- For the current exhibition, informal photography for your personal use is permitted in the galleries. Flash is not permitted.
- Please silence your phone and, if you must take a call, exit the gallery and do so in the Sculpture Garden.
- Food, drink, chewing gum and tobacco products are not allowed in the galleries.
- Please leave large bags or backpacks in your car, as we cannot accommodate them in the galleries at this time.
- Do not carry children on shoulders.
- Strollers are allowed in the galleries, but they must be pushed by adults at all times.
- We ask that children younger than 12 be supervised by an adult at all times.
The Katonah Museum of Art is a non-collecting institution geared towards visual arts, located in Katonah, New York. The Museum presents changing exhibitions that cross a spectrum of artistic disciplines, cultures, and historical periods. Housed in an elegant building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Katonah Museum of Art originates three to four major exhibitions annually.
With each exhibition, artists, curators, and other specialists present art through programs, lectures, and workshops designed for visitors of all ages. The Pollack Family Learning Center uses a visual and interactive environment that encourages children and their parents to participate in hands-on projects. The Katonah Museum also offers outdoor concerts, evening cocktail parties, international travels, and trips to other museums and private collections. An outdoor Sculpture Garden, shaded by towering pines, displays contemporary works.
From the beginning, the KMA was committed to presenting exceptional art from all cultures and time periods. The founders’ decision to be a non-collecting institution resulted in a dynamic and flexible exhibition program, which remains one of the most distinctive features of the Museum. The KMA offers lectures, films, workshops, concerts and other events for a general audience; and presents innovative and substantive programs for nearly 100 member schools and community organizations. The Museum's outreach programs for the local Latino immigrant population are at the forefront of community-based education programs.
Its exhibitions, events, and educational programs invite everyone to experience and reflect on the impact and transformative power of the visual arts.
