Recasting Antiquity: Whistler, Tanagra, and the Female Form focuses on a series of works on paper by the American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), created in the early 1890s under the inspiration of the recently excavated Hellenistic Greek terracotta figurines known collectively as Tanagras. Recasting Antiquity brings these Whistler prints and pastels into conversation with ancient Tanagra figurines on loan from the Louvre Museum.

This exhibition has been co-curated by Ruth Allen, curator of Greek and Roman art at the Carlos Museum, and Linda Merrill, teaching professor and director of undergraduate studies in the Art History Department at Emory University.
