Multisensory Performance to Activate Creativity for Musicians
with Doctora Xingona Diana Alvarez
This workshop, with singer-songwriter, poet, filmmaker, scholar, and educator Doctora Xingona Diana Alvarez (they/she), features embodied creative writing, deep listening, music/sound, and visual/video art exercises to activate creativity for musicians and artists of all genres. Rooted in the liberatory practices of QTBIPOC (queer, trans, and gender expansive Black, Indigenous, and people of color) artists as well as their lived experience as a genderqueer Xicane themself, Doctora Xingona interweaves activist teachings into their nourishing learning spaces. Musicians and artists of all ages and levels of experience are invited to play, witness, create, share, and perform in a welcoming environment. All instruments and genres are welcome. Artists are especially encouraged to expand practice toward new creative disciplines.
Doctora Xingona Diana Alvarez
An expansive multimedia artist and educator, Doctora Xingona's music, poetry, performances, films, and gatherings center transcendence, kinship, and the co-liberation and nourishment of queer, trans, and gender expansive BIPOC artists. Doctora Xingona (they/she) is the creator/composer behind Quiero Volver: A Xingonx Ritual Opera, a multimedia living performance altar for QTBIPOC artists to convene and manifest futures. Quiero Volver has been awarded the Public Art for Spatial Justice Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts as well as multiple Massachusetts Cultural Council grants. In 2023, Doctora Xingona will present and create new multimedia performance work in collaboration with queer youth and the University of Skövde, Sweden. Doctora Xingona’s debut album Ser Artista was produced by Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Seth Glier, and features songs from Quiero Volver: A Xingonx Ritual Opera. www.diana-alvarez.com / @brujajuana
