Music Theory for Songwriters

What are the tricks that songwriters use to get that unexpected chord change that catches your ear every time? Bring your songs and your instruments and we'll break down some of the basics and get to some of the more complex ideas that take a beautiful song and make it brilliant. In this class you'll learn how understanding theory helps recognize conventions (and places where people adeptly stray from them). We'll pick apart our favorite songs, we'll look at some scales, and we'll practice on instruments we feel comfortable with (voice is fine too!). Beginners and folks who just want to practice training their ears are welcome. 

About the Instructor

Mara Levi has been writing songs since they were 8 years old, and has been honing their craft ever since. As an internationally touring performer Mara has been writing and arranging songs for rock band, solo voice, and various choirs. Mara currently teaches music in schools and privately, and leads the Northampton Pride Chorus. 

 

The Parlor Room Nonprofit and School of Music's mission is to: Promote a vibrant musical community in downtown Northampton, MA for musicians of all abilities and at all stages of their career. The Parlor Room will bring nationally touring and local acts to our listening room to provide an exceptional experience for the artist and audience and guide musicians and anyone interested in a career in the music industry through our school of music.
