Neptune’s Core is an alternative indie rock band from Chicago composed of two sets of sisters.
They’ve performed at venues across Chicago including Schubas, Empty Bottle, City Winery, and Hideout as well as gigs in neighboring cities such as Milwaukee and Madison. They released their debut album “Can't Have It All” in 2020, their second full-length album “Evolving” in the Fall of 2021, and are currently recording for their third album. Their sound has been compared to everyone from Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy to Mazzy Star and Fiona Apple but is an exciting mix all their own.
To build something new, you have to let the old things go. That spirit of reinvention is essential to Chicago indie-folk project Free Range, the brainchild of Sofia Jensen (guitar, they/she) that came together at a time when the world seemed to be falling apart. Live and in the studio, Sofia is joined by collaborator and producer Jack Henry (drums, he/him), who helped Jensen fill out the skeletons of songs she composed in the solitude of quarantine. Bailey Minzenberger (bass, they/them) sat in with Jack and Sofia for a series of late-night sessions during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and before long, the three musicians had re-recorded an entire album’s worth of material.
Free Range is a departure from Sofia’s previous work as a rock ‘n’ roll bandleader; they “wanted to turn the electric down, and the acoustic up” for this new project.
The result of these late-night sessions is Practice, a record whose warm, organic sound belies the isolated, uncertain circumstances under which it was made. Practice marks a new evolution for Jensen, both lyrically and musically. Warm and gentle, it’s like a phoenix shimmering across a hazy afternoon sky
