NMC MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Northwestern Michigan College’s Music Department offers students the opportunity to complete the first two years of music-major coursework in a creative and supportive environment. Students receive individualized instruction from our dynamic faculty in classes designed for students' success. Standard music-major coursework includes: Music Theory, Sight Singing and Ear Training, Group Piano Instruction, Applied Instruction (private lessons), and participation in NMC Music Ensembles. Ensemble opportunities include: Chamber Singers, Grand Traverse Chorale, Canticum Novum, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Other ensemble opportunities include chamber groups, percussion ensembles, jazz combos, and others. Upon successful completion of the two-year program, students will have earned an Associate Degree in Science and the Arts that is transferable to most four-year institutions of higher learning.

The NMC Music Department also offers training and education to students interested in careers in music production and sound recording through our Audio Tech program. Students in the NMC Audio Tech program study live sound, studio recording, and digital audio as well as traditional music theory courses. Student in our program have the opportunity to learn, and work with, industry-standard hardware and software recording platforms including: Pro Logic, Studio One, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools. And, because NMC is an Authorized Apple Training Center for Education and an Avid Learning Center, students can earn professional certification while completing their Audio Tech coursework. Upon successful completion of the two-year program, students will have earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science as well as several levels of certification.

The NMC Music Department is also home to the NMC Children’s Choir. This award-winning organization is celebrating its twenty-eighth year of providing an opportunity for students in Northwest Michigan to participate in a quality, performance-based choral music experience.  When the NMCCC was founded, the program involved one choir of forty-five students.  Over the years the program has dramatically changed, and there are now six choirs involving over two hundred and fifty singers from kindergarten through the ninth grade. Highlights from the previous twenty-five years include award-winning performances at state, national and international competitions and appearances at numerous choral conferences and festivals.
