Watch a powerful documentary on the Cape’s coastal erosion crisis and join a panel discussion with its writer and contributors.
No Refuge is a 30-minute film that exposes the extent of climate change fueled destruction surrounding the peninsula, centering on the devastating effect it’s having on the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge at Morris Island.
Using aerial footage, on-the-ground filming and interviews with those trying to protect the island, it charts the loss of 100 feet of the bluff through storm surges and flooding, and its consequences.
Buildings including the National Weather Service balloon launching facility and US Fish and Wildlife Service Headquarters are among those that have been demolished. Erosion is also affecting local wildlife, and threatening homes on the island.
“The documentary delivers the message that denying climate change is not an option,” said the film’s writer Tim Wood. “Ignoring it is a reckless gamble with our future and our children’s future. The Cape Cod Commission says sea level rises could cause between 400 and 1,000 feet of retreat along our entire shoreline by 2100. Our film is a call to take a stand and fight back.’
Following the movie, Mr Wood will be joined by naturalist John Hanlon and Eddie Horowitz, the former president of Friends of Monomoy. They will discuss the issues raised, reveal events following the film’s production, and take questions from the audience.
A portion of proceeds will go towards the Friends of Monomoy.
