Jump Cut is reviving our Noir Night Out series, starting with Beat the Devil (1953), directed by John Huston, who wrote the screenplay with and up-and-coming Truman Capote and stars Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Lorre, and Robert Morley. One of the few films where a film noir is mixed with a comedy, it's a parody of Huston's The Maltese Falcon and films of the same genre. The script, which was written on a day-to-day basis as the film was being shot, concerns the adventures of a motley crew of swindlers and ne'er-do-wells trying to lay claim to land rich in uranium deposits in Kenya as they wait in a small Italian port to travel aboard an ill-fated tramp steamer en route to Mombasa.
Doors open at 5pm for dinner - chili and all the fixins.
Film screens at 6pm.
Tickets $15 with dinner
