The Film: Tony le Stéphanois returns from five years in prison to find his girlfriend has left him. He’s out of money, down on his luck and is quickly drawn into orchestrating another heist. Can they pull off the impossible, and if so, is that the most difficult part? Rififi is more than criminals committing the perfect crime, it’s a portrait of men getting so blinded by hubris and ego that it ultimately becomes their downfall, and their actions after the heist endangers the lives of everyone involved.
The film’s co-writer and director, Jules Dassin, was one of the many filmmakers who were blacklisted in early ‘50s Hollywood for his early ties to the Communist Party. Dassin moved to France and didn’t work in film for several years until making Rififi. It’s one of the most influential heist movies ever (some say it started the French New Wave), and the execution of the robbery sequence is considered to be one of the most impressive in film history. Rififi is the most important film of Dassin's career because it not only restored his name but also gave him a second chance at filmmaking.
