Description

On Saturday, November 28, 2026, start the holiday season by stepping back into the 17th century at the Museum at the John Brown House for our November Open House. Inspired by the Mary Williams exhibit, this family-friendly event offers a captivating look at Rhode Island’s early history.

What happens when an idealist gets the chance to put his ideas into practice, and then lives long enough to see the consequences? At 11am, experience Two Rogers: Hope and Consequence, a unique living history presentation featuring Daniel Perkins and John McNiff portraying founder Roger Williams at two pivotal moments in his life as they examine the complex legacy of his early ideals. In 1645, a younger Williams looks upon Rhode Island as “A Place to Begin,” giving thanks for the land, people, and opportunity to build something new. Twenty years later, an older Williams asks “What Has Endured?” Looking back on friendships and conflicts, successes and disappointments, he considers what became of those early hopes. Through land, people, and ideals, Two Rogers explores Thanksgiving not as a holiday, but as a question: after nearly 30 years of the Rhode Island experiment, for what should Roger Williams give thanks?

Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy ongoing historical clothing discussions with living historian Kristel Henry, who will explore the layers and stories behind 17th-century women’s garments. Younger visitors can join in historical crafts, and the museum galleries will be open for exploring.

Admission to the open house is pay-as-you-wish, and donations are warmly welcomed. While exploring early Rhode Island history and enjoying a sweet treat, jump-start your holiday shopping in the museum shop, which features one-of-a-kind, exclusive RIHS merchandise.

Located at 52 Power Street in Providence, The Museum at the John Brown House is open from 10am-4pm. Registration is requested, but not required; seating for the 11am talk is limited.
