Description
Wildland Firefighting with Amanda Monthei
Suggested donation: $10
This program is being offered for either in-person attendance (limited to 35 and requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination) or virtual attendance via a livestream link. Recordings of each program will be sent to all registrants.
Join Amanda Monthei as she shares her experience on a hotshot crew in the Northwest and discusses how conditions are rapidly changing with climate change and ever-increasing fuel loading. She will discuss the history of wildfires in these areas and talk about how fire is essential in these ecosystems. Her talk will culminate with actionable steps folks can take to prepare for a future with fire in the Pacific Northwest (yes, even in our rainforests!).
Amanda Monthei is a writer, podcast host, angler, skier, and former wildland firefighter.
She’s written about wildfires and other natural disasters for NBC News, The Washington Post, Outside, The Atlantic and Patagonia. She’s interested in empowering Westerners to learn more about wildfires, culminating in her starting Life with Fire—a podcast that explores the critical role wildfire plays in America’s forests, lands, and communities.
Special thanks to our program sponsor: the Northwest Maritime Center.
