We are thrilled to invite you to "Onokoro – creations/beginnings" - An evening of music and dance exploring the universal concepts of creations and beginnings. September 23rd and 24th, 2023

Event Details

“ONOKORO – creations/beginnings” is a journey in dance and instrumental virtuosity inspired by creation myths. Audiences are immersed in a flow of music, dance, and ritual that evokes timeless and universal traditions through contemporary musical and dance artistry. From “Ryoanji” to “Netori, Netori,” through to “Onokoro”,  contemporary dancer Miki Orihara, clarinetist and hichiriki player Thomas Piercy, bugaku dancer Maki Yamamae, and their colleagues in “Onokoro” evoke the magic and majesty of creations and beginnings which connects us all. The one-hour non-stop show will feature a captivating blend of contemporary compositions using traditional Japanese instruments with Western classical instruments, performed by a stellar ensemble of musicians and dancers.

Music by John Cage, Gilbert Galindo, Masatora Goya, Bin Li, and Miho Sasaki.

Performances by Thomas Piercy, clarinet/hichiriki/ohichiriki; Miki Orihara, dancer/choreographer modern dance; Maki Yamamae, dancer/choreographer Bugaku dance; Ghislaine van den Heuvel, dancer.
Gagaku ensemble: Lish Lindsey, ryuteki/hichiriki; Joseph Jordan, hichiriki; ​Harrison Hsu, sho; Masayo Ishigure, koto.
String quintet: Sabina Torosjan, violin; Lara Lewison, violin; Laura Thompson, viola; Daniel Hass, cello; ​Pablo Aslan, double bass.
