Orchestra End-of-Year Concert - The Symphony Orchestra will present the final performance of Kinder HSPVA's 2024-2025 Season on Thursday, May 22, at 6:30pm. Under the baton of Dr. Brad Smith, 90 student musicians will perform a bold and moving repertoire that explores the themes of social justice and American national identity.
Of Our New Day Begun, by acclaimed composer Omar Thomas, is a tribute to the nine victims of the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Thomas includes elements of gospel and blues to honor the Black community's resilience and rich musical traditions. This contemporary work is paired with Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait (1942), a stirring piece of Americana with spoken excerpts from Abraham Lincoln's speeches. This American classic is a timeless reminder of Lincoln's enduring legacy and the ideals of freedom and equality.
The concert will also feature Mendelssohn's The Hebrides Overture (1830) and the 1st movement of Dvořák's Cello Concerto (1894), featuring cellist Auden Smith '25. Smith is a winner in the 2025 Kinder HSPVA Concerto Competition.
