Description
Class description: Come explore and paint old Valdres! Diane studied Old Valdres extensively with Eli Saelid, Trudy Wasson and Nils Ellingsgaard. This class will be filled with information about Valdres painting. There will be lectures where Diane will show photos and designs as well as demonstrations where she will show how the elements are painted. Paints, backgrounds and stylistic influences will be discussed as well as Nils Ellingsgaards’ book, Rosemaling in Valdres. Photos from the book will be explained as well as how different rosemaling artists executed their designs and their historical significance.
You will have the opportunity to download some designs and color photos to paint or use to develop your own design. You can use the week between classes to paint and then Diane can provide you with feedback on your painting if you want it.
Much of the Rosemaling in the US has been in the Peder Aadnes style, referred to as Valdres, but having its roots in the Guild painters of Denmark. He was a Guild painter who used the patterns and guides from the Guilds in Baroque Floral and Chinoiserie. Painting done by the authentic Valdres painters was much different and is beautiful in its own right.
In this class you will study the three basic motifs and specific designs only seen in Old Valdres. See demonstrations of the Cow’s Eye Rose, Heart shaped scrolls, Long, unusual S shaped leaves and Farmer’s Rococo.
This is sure to be an interesting and informative class and open up some new ideas for rosemalers to study and explore.
