The Symbol of the City of Reading for over a Century

Reading's iconic Pagoda was constructed in 1908 by local businessman and City Councilman William Abbott Witman. After a failed attempt to gain a liquor license and run the establishment as a unique resort, the property sold to another local businessman, Jonathan Mould. Mould deeded the property to the City of Reading on April 21st, 1911 for $1, with the understanding that Mount Penn and the Pagoda itself would become the birthplace of Berks County's Conservation movement, spearheaded by Mould himself. His legacy is responsible for the vast acreage of undisturbed wildlife, wonderful trails, and natural panoramic views we enjoy today.
