Panel Discussion: Letters to Ms. 1000: Words of Wisdom from African American Women Architects
A Panel Discussion and Book Signing co-Sponsored by National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Atlanta Chapter with special introductory remarks from Bangseh Akuchu, President of NOMA Atlanta and an architect at Gensler, specializing in equitable urban development.
About the Event:
In celebration of Women’s History Month, join MODA for a panel discussion and book signing with Atlanta-based architects and designers, including contributing authors to the book, Shelly-Anne Tulia Scott and Jonné Smith, Letters to Ms. 1000: Words of Wisdom from African American Women Architects, Vol. 1. The compilation features stories and life lessons from Black women architects across the United States, of which there are fewer than 650 comprising only .4% of the profession.
Exquisitely illustrated by Black Illustrator and architect Ochuko Evwaraye, each letter compels readers to share a role in elucidating the state of the profession and the universal aspirations for racial justice and social equity. The hope is by 2040, there will be 1000 licensed female Black architects in the U.S., hence the title “Ms. 1000.”
What to Expect:
- A dynamic discussion of the state of architecture in Atlanta today, especially focused on Black women architects in the field
- Insider’s look at the book from the perspective of the authors themselves
- An opportunity to ask questions to the panel during a Q & A Session
- Connecting with architects and design enthusiasts in Atlanta
- Purchase the book and have it signed by the authors
Moderator:
Ronnie Belizaire, an accomplished interior designer at HKS in Atlanta, where she leads the Commercial Interiors Practice with a focus on innovative, tailored solutions. A former IIDA President, she is dedicated to equity in design and actively serves her community.
Panelists:
Monica Fenderson is the Principal of MOSA Architects, LLC, with over 20 years in interdisciplinary design and a commitment to quality.
