SYNOPSIS:
A witty and touching one-man cabaret act celebrating queer artistry at the turn of the 20th century.

The early 20th century was an extraordinarily hostile time for queer people, but an underground cabaret movement known as "the Pansy Craze" gave voice to courageous performers like Gene Malin, Karyl Norman, and Bruz Fletcher. Inspired by these crusaders and their incredible artistry, Pansy imagines one such cabaret singer holding court for an audience of Hollywood stars as America enters World War II. A celebration of queer artistry, creativity, and resilience, Pansy is a story about singing out when the world demands your silence.

ABOUT TRADEMARK'S WORKSHOP AND READINGS:

Because of Trademark’s commitment to high-quality entertainment, our organization invests in extensive development processes for all of our new works. Each development timeline can range from 3 to 5 years or more. Throughout the development process, each new play or musical is refined through workshops during which artists are provided with 1-to-2 weeks of rehearsal time with directors, actors, and designers to then hear their work aloud, edit scripts, revise scores, and strengthen their stories. These workshops culminate in public readings, at which audiences will see a work-in-progress presentation of the play or musical. It is during these events that our new works mission comes most alive as artist, art, and audiences come together to engage with bold stories still taking shape: artists gain valuable insights from the live audience response and post-viewing feedback, while audiences gain a deeper understanding of our daring new works and the creative process that brings them to life. From there, our artists take their work and further refine it before a full production in a future season.
