About the Perdido Key Music Festival:
Mark A. McBride, founder of the festival, first discovered the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival (FBISF) in the late 1980s while visiting the Gulf Shores area along the Alabama–Florida Gulf Coast. At the time, McBride worked in real estate and the art business and had a deep passion for music and the arts. One evening at a beachfront bar in Gulf Shores—located where The Hangout stands today—he encountered the festival during its second weekend and was struck by the extraordinary talent performing. From that point forward, he planned his annual fall trips to the beach around the November festival.
Around 2000, McBride relocated to the Gulf Coast to pursue real estate development and became closely connected with the local music community across Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Perdido Key. During this time he formed a friendship with Joe Gilchrist, owner of the legendary Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar and founder of FBISF. Their relationship grew through shared involvement in the bar business—McBride owned the Purple Parrot Tiki Bar—and through joint participation in community organizations and development efforts on Perdido Key.
McBride later acquired the Playa del Rio RV Resort and helped establish Sandy Roots Records alongside partners Christina Christian and Nick Biechricher. At Playa del Rio, he created a music-centered beach destination and incorporated songwriter events connected to the Frank Brown festival. What began as a small backyard songwriter appreciation cookout and jam session evolved into a growing music event supporting charitable causes.
By 2025, the event had outgrown the RV park and moved to Warrior Beer Company. In 2026, the festival will relocate to the Flora-Bama, with all proceeds benefiting the Frank Brown Foundation for Music and Songwriters' Festival, along with the Gulf Coast Musicians Medical Fund.
