Spirituals and classic jazz fill an evening of eclectic performance when New York bassist Hilliard Greene heads up a double-bill, Feb. 14 at Mars Landing Galleries. Hill opens the concert with selections from a program he titles Negro Spirituals Until the Civil War: When Folksongs Bring Freedom. In the second half of the program, Hill teams with prolific local pianist Michael Jefry Stevens for a set of Stevens’ and Hill’s original compositions mixed with reimagined jazz standards.
Greene performs widely in New York City—recitals, nightclubs, concert halls (including Carnegie Hall), recording studios, radio and television—as well as throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, the West Indies and South America. served as a musical director for nearly 20 years with Jimmy Scott. Greene also composes and performs solo music for contrabass.
He developed his program of spirituals to spotlight the significance, art and beauty of 19th-century American heritage songs associated with the Underground Railroad, the network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people of African descent.
Stevens has been active on the international jazz scene for four decades, composed more than 400 pieces of music across a variety of styles and released more than 100 recordings featuring his own music. He has performed and recorded with Dave Liebman, Oliver Lake, Dave Douglas, Leo Smith, Matt Wilson, Han Bennink, Jeanne Lee, George Schuller and Dame Evelyn Glennie, among other luminaries.
