Pinch of Salt: Handwriting, Heritage & Recipes
with Stef Alicia
Recipes hold more than ingredients. Handwritten notes, folded index cards, and directions like “add salt to taste” preserve memory, ritual, and care across generations.
In this hands-on workshop, led by renowned cursive artist and educator Stef Alicia McCalmon you’ll explore the relationship between handwriting, food, heritage, and design through storytelling and making. Participants will reflect on recipes as personal archives while creating a handwritten recipe keepsake using lettering and mixed materials.
What to Expect:
Arrive at 5:30pm to explore MODA’s current exhibition
Explore recipes as objects of design and cultural memory
Engage in guided handwriting and storytelling prompts
Experiment with cursive, annotation, and personal visual language
Create a handcrafted recipe artifact to take home
Participants are encouraged to bring handwritten family recipes, cookbook pages, or kitchen notes with character, stains, scribbles, and all.
