Politics In the Pub: Control or Care? The laws shaping young lives

  • May 20, 2026 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
  • Turbine Platform - Brisbane Powerhouse

    Brisbane Powerhouse
    New Farm, Queensland 4005
Description

Presented by New Farm Neighbourhood Centre.

Join 4ZZZ Radio Presenter and Producer Elly Pashen in conversation with Queensland Youth Parliament Members Joshua Golato and Verona Hilzinger, Youth Advocacy Service CEO Katherine Hayes, and social worker and proud Boorooberongal woman Emma Matthews to hear their views on the impact of increasing restrictions on young people and the laws that are shaping their lives. Could these laws, intended to protect, be creating unintended harm?

When do we treat young people as capable decision-makers, and when do we restrict them? Does the erosion of young people’s rights lead to a diminished sense of responsibility for young people? And how can families, practitioners, and policymakers better support young people to participate and to thrive?

Politics in the Pub is a volunteer run community conversation which tackles the most pressing contemporary issues for both Australia and the world.

New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, a program of Communify Queensland, has been hosting Politics in the Pub events for 2 decades with each event offering a pressing contemporary issue addressed by a panel of experts and an open conversation in which all members of the community can engage in, debate and discuss.

The event is made possible through the generous support of the Patrons of New Farm, Village Voice and Brisbane Powerhouse.

The bar will be open and the conversation will be lively. Come along and join the conversation.

This is a “Pay What You Wish” performance. Feel free to contribute or come along for free! Ticket registration is encouraged to secure your spot. All proceeds (minus booking fees) go to the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre.
