Practical Dog Training Workshop
with
Forrest Micke and Dr. Stewart Hilliard
The weekend will focus on practical work with dog-handler teams conducted by Forrest, anchored by presentations from Stewart on how behavioral science informs modern dog training. Each day will begin with discussion of science-based dog training and then move into practical sessions to show how psychological principles are applied to modern training of companion, sport, and practical working dogs. “Anything goes” Q&A will wrap up each day.
Practical topics will include: +Reinforcement strategies, criteria-setting, rules-based play as a reinforcement and training system, principles and application of secondary reinforcers, session management, leash work and handling, integration of aversive control to “proof” +Reinforcement-taught skills, and problem-solving. Emphasis will be on recognizing where and why Pavlovian and instrumental behaviors comer into conflict and hinder training, and how to “insulate” trained behaviors from Pavlovian interference.
