Pre-Bonsai Material Repotting

🪴 Afternoon Repotting Workshop (1:00–4:00 PM)

This hands-on repotting session focuses on root health, soil, and proper container setup—critical foundations for successful bonsai development. Participants will work on trees selected earlier in the day or bring appropriate nursery stock of their own.

Why We Repot

Nursery trees are grown for rapid landscape growth, not long-term container health. Repotting:

• Improves drainage and root oxygen
• Begins correcting circling or poorly structured roots
• Sets the tree up for recovery and future training

This session emphasizes health and preparation, not finished styling.

What We’ll Do

With guidance from experienced members, participants will repot their tree using appropriate soil and containers.

• Assess whether repotting is appropriate for each tree
• Perform light to moderate root work as timing allows
• Position the tree correctly and discuss aftercare

Some species may receive light root work or slip-potting only, depending on plant condition and seasonal timing.

Available On Site (for Purchase from the Club)

• Pots suitable for repotting ~3-gallon nursery stock
• Two bonsai soil options:
  • ALP Mix (better) – excellent drainage and root development
  • Bob Pruski’s Formula (good) – proven, forgiving general mix
