Description

Join the Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center for a day of ocean and Great Lakes Films.

NOAA's Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary hosts the Thunder Bay International Film Festival in partnership with the International Ocean Film Festival, the premier global platform for ocean literacy and education through independent film.

This ticket is for Program #4 in Theater 1, which includes the following films:

Earth is Blue: Gray Whales, 2 min

In the winter months of December and January, gray whales can be seen passing by California during their southbound migration to Mexico. Gray whales make one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal, traveling about 10,000 miles round-trip and in some cases upwards of 14,000 miles. Traveling past heavily populated regions along the West Coast, gray whales are at risk of boat collisions or entanglement in fishing gear. To help these graceful animals, always give them plenty of space. If you see an entangled whale, you can help out by reporting the entanglement.

Shark Researchers: A New Approach to Shark Conservation, Arnau Argemi Gonzalez (Spain) 3 min

How can we convert Belizean fishermen, who have long relied on shark fishing for their livelihoods, into advocates for shark conservation?  This film presents a transformative opportunity, introducing alternative livelihoods benefitting both the sharks and the local communities.

What if there's an oil spill on the Great Lakes?, Great Lakes Now, 13 min

No one wants an oil spill in the Great Lakes.  As a source of drinking water for millions of people, responding to freshwater spills entails confronting  consequences beyond those in marine environments.  With so much at stake, producer David J. Ruck sought to find out what it takes to be prepared for the unthinkable in the Great Lakes.

Orca - Black & White Gold, Sarah Norenberg (Australia) 93 min

Most of the world no longer traps and imprisons whales, but Russian captured orcas are still being held in cramped “whale jails” while their jailers look for illegal buyers from oceanariums, mainly in China.  Intrepid activists, often undercover, investigate the miscreants - catchers, sellers, buyers - and the enforcers.  The Russian government is cooperating, even asking Jean-Michael Cousteau for help.

Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Established in 2010 by local community leaders, the Friends of TBNMS is a nonprofit 501(c)3. Its founders envisioned the significant opportunity the sanctuary offered for protecting our Great Lakes and their rich maritime history, hands-on educational experiences for area students, and local economic development. Today, that vision has become a reality with the Friends of TBNMS sharing a close working relationship with the sanctuary staff, playing a critical role in funding the sanctuary’s education programs, community outreach efforts, unique museum experiences, and research.
