Description

Maps can distill a story out of complex information and spark conversation. In the stages of science, there’s a continuum of map solutions that aid in both the understanding of complex topics and the ability to reach broad audiences. From using participant-led mapping with Arctic Indigenous communities to creating maps of climate change impacts for a global audience, the possibilities of maps in the realm of our science are endless.

Join Greg Fiske for an exploration of commonly used tools and techniques for making beautiful maps, as well as common challenges, success stories, and failures, faced in nearly two and half decades of making maps for Woods Hole scientists.

Mr. Fiske is the Director of Geospatial Technology at Woodwell Climate Research Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. As a geographer and cartographer, he specializes in GIS, remote sensing, and data visualization. Fiske bridges art and science, creating impactful maps to communicate complex climate data, particularly regarding Arctic ecosystems.

The image attached is River Art. This image shows elevation data from the ArcticDEM project (NGA-NSF) for the Lena River delta region of north-central Siberia. The variations in pink shades indicate how water has changed the landscape through time.

Arctic DEM is an initiative to automatically produce a high resolution, high quality, digital surface model (DSM) of the Arctic using optical stereo imagery, high-performance computing, and  open-source photogrammetry software.

You can view more of Greg’s amazing work in his Naturescape Gallery exhibit, Cartographies of Arctic Change, September through October. Naturescape Gallery is located in the Museum’s auditorium.
