Queer is an audacious, unflinching look at addiction, desperation, and longing from Luca Guadagnino – who happens to be a master of portraying those complex subjects on screen. While far more grounded than David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Burroughs’ mind-bending Naked Lunch, it proves to be every bit as affecting, with Guadagnino lending a gauzy, surreal air to the tale. Craig and Starkey are mesmerizing, with the former delivering a pained portrayal of Lee that stands out in an already sterling career. If you have a heart and have ever yearned for something outside your grasp, then this is required viewing.
