Prerequisite: Proficiency at throwing cylinders on the wheel

Class Schedule: (April 2025) Thursday Evenings for Team B for two sessions April 24th 6-8, May 1st 6-8. One week gap to bisque fire the pots Friday Evening May 16th 6-8 PM for both teams to decorate and glaze at Sweet Art Emporium. Saturday May 17th 9 AM-4 PM for firing at Mis-Bee-Haven Farm Broken Island Road. Sunday for pickup of fired pieces from the saggar fire. 

Session I: 1. Instruction on the processes and each student will be provided 5 lbs of Raku clay to make 4 to 5 pieces on the wheel 2. Students throw and trim their pots, mostly vases and bottles 3. Pots are ribbed smooth 4. Pieces are allowed to reach bone dry on the shelf for a week Session 2: 1. Pieces made in Session 1 will get 3 coats of Terra Sigillata applied to the pots and the pots will be burnished before firing to Cone 06 If there are 12 students there will be 48 to 60 pieces to bisque before Session 3. Session 3: 1. Both teams will come together after bisque firing for a Friday evening session before the Saturday firing event. 2. Students will bring dried organic materials and aluminum foil for wrapping their saggar pit fire pieces 3. Pieces for the saggar will be prepared by the students to include using their own organics and copper carbonate, sugar and salts provided by the instructor 4. The instructor will use Ferric Chloride (a caustic) that produces brilliant reds Instructor will treat several pots as a demonstration using proper safety techniques 5. Pieces will be wrapped in two layers of foil to form a saggar 6. Saggars will be crated up for hauling to the farm 2 7. Students will glaze their raku pots using glazes provided by the instructor 8. Students will place the glazed pieces under the fan for the night and the instructor will pick them up early Saturday morning 9. Student pieces will be equally divided between saggar and classic Raku (2 pieces each) Session 4: This session will be the actual firing and run from 10 am to 4 pm. Students will be asked to bring a lunch, drinks and a folding lawn chair. Certain clothing will be required for safety. No open toed shoes, hair pulled back, long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants. Please bring a pair of safety glasses. Instructor will provide the necessary safety equipment (face shields, heavy gloves, tongs, etc.)
