Modeling and data analysis gives us a clearer picture of what is possible - 100% or darn close. What is reliable - 100% or darn close. And what is likely to be cheap - 100%… In early December, Xcel announced a 100% reduction in carbon dioxide by 2050. 2 days later, Platte River Power Authority’s (PRPA) board resolved to reach 100% non-carbon electricity by 2030. The discussion is rapidly moving from possibility to exactly what, how cheap, and how soon. And, of course, there are still many unanswered questions. For example, our modeling points to storage, helping us get to 95%, but above 95%, traditional storage appears cost-inefficient. And we know that many electric utilities love to over-spend and over-invest. To have low costs, we must limit their zeal. And how do zucchinis help us understand low-cost renewable electricity? Like all of Ken’s talks, we can expect enough clear, quick graphs to keep the numbers lovers happy, with the meaning behind the data warmly explained for the rest of us. And maybe even a few surprises and laughs along the way. Speaker Bio: Ken Regelson is an analyst and advocates for high levels of renewables.
