As of early July 2024, nearly 44,000 migrants from Venezuela and other countries have arrived by bus or plane to Chicago. Whether fleeing political persecution, economic uncertainty, or regional violence, Chicago is now their home. The World Economic Forum’s Chicago Global Shapers team is collaborating with our mutual aid partners, Southside Strong, a team of amazing women and migrant volunteers running a free store for new arrivals called La Tiendita in Washington Park (https://www.gofundme.com/f/our-new-space-la-tiendita-freestore). In the spirit of being good citizens and charitable hosts, the Chicago Global Shapers team needs your help!
What Is A "Rent Party"?
The Chicago Global Shapers are hosting a “Rent Party” to help Southside Strong cover the rent and utilities of their free store for migrant families. A portion of the funds raised through ticket sales will help ensure Southside Strong can keep the store open and continue its mission. The remaining portion of the funds will cover the cost of the fundraising party, offering an opportunity to learn more about the migrant crisis, connect with our Southside Strong partners, and enjoy the summer weather.
Included:
Tickets include two drink tickets and light Mexican appetizers. Drink tickets are valid for any draft beer, mocktail, non-alcoholic beer, or house margarita (frozen or on the rocks). A cash bar and upgraded menu is available, where a small portion of the purchase price goes to our fundraising goal.
