ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THE EVENT
Rita J. Powers is a fourth generation Marylander. She was born in Frederick, Maryland and comes from a family of educators, with many of them graduating from Bowie State University. Rita is married and has a son and daughter. Both of her children (Chaz and Cherita) are proud Bowie State University graduates.
After completing her undergraduate studies at Bowie State University, she later attended graduate school majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Howard University. Soon after that, Rita was employed as a speech pathologist at Gallaudet University (Model Secondary School for the Deaf and Kendall Demonstration School), Washington, D.C. She retired from Prince Georges Public Schools as a speech-language pathologist In 2016.
This event, “The Reunion of the Classes”, is Rita’s way of saying thank you to the Bowie State University family, the academic opportunities, lifelong friendships, and memories. And most of all, this event is for those “who want to connect yesterday with today, today with tomorrow, and tomorrow with ourselves.” (H.U. Bison)
ENTERTAINMENT
RHONDA JETER
Jazz Vocalist Rhonda Jeter is a native of Washington, D.C. Her interest in music began at a young age when her family purchased a piano for their home. At the age of nine she began playing the violin and enrolled in the D.C. Youth Orchestra program. A student of the D.C. Public School System, she sang her first solo at the tender age of ten in a locally acclaimed Black History Program at Brightwood Elementary School. Her music career continued as she briefly studied piano and voice and participated in various choruses and bands in and around the metropolitan area throughout her teenage years. After graduating from Howard University with a degree in Occupational Therapy, Rhonda continued performing vocally in and around the D. C area in such clubs as One Step Down, The Twins Lounge, The Ibex, and Charlie’s. Putting her singing on hold to raise her daughter Danielle, she has returned to the jazz scene. In addition to performing for private audiences, some of her musical venues include performances at schools in Prince George's County and the District of Columbia; The Blair Mansion Inn, Westminster Presbyterian Church, The Channel Inn, Takoma Park Chapel, The Omega Room, and Utopia to name a few. Strongly inspired by Sarah Vaughn and Washington native Shirley Horn, she looks forward to continuing her journey in jazz.
