Description
Filmmaker and Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl is considered one of the most controversial women of the 20th century. Her films Triumph of the Will and Olympia are defined by fascist aesthetics—perfectly staged body worship, and the celebration of all that is “superior” and victorious—while projecting contempt for the imperfect and weak. After the war, Riefenstahl spent decades denying her association with Nazi ideology and claiming ignorance of the Holocaust.
Drawing on never-before-seen documents from her estate—including private films, photos, recordings, and letters—Veiel’s documentary uncovers fragments of her biography and situates them within a wider historical context. The film examines her skill at controlling her image, her unapologetic stance late in life, and the enduring influence of her visual language in an age when fascism, propaganda, and political image-making are once again on the rise.
Winner of the Cinema & Arts Award at the Venice Film Festival and the CineDocs Prize at CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, Riefenstahl is a mesmerizing, incisive look at an artist whose work and legacy remain fiercely debated.
