Description

Nature provides an ideal play therapy space for healing and transformation. Throughout history people across cultures have interacted with and related to nature to promote healing and wellness. There is evidence that Nature Play decreases anxiety, depression, ADHD, and stress. Nature Play Therapy can be used to improve self-esteem, resiliency, creativity, and problem solving. This workshop provides information about: Mindfulness, labyrinths, metaphors, ethics concerns, and creation of Healing Gardens. We will share metaphors from nature. Metaphors in nature can provide emotional distance for defenses that need to be honored. Sensory Mindfulness meditation in the Healing Gardens allows for all senses for meditation. Tasting strawberries, raspberries, honeyberries, and herbs. Touching ferns, rocks, cactus, pinecones, and lamb’s ear. Smelling roses, monarda, lilacs, mock orange, and herbs. Seeing colors and patterns in the flowers and leaves. Sounds include windchimes, birds, and water. Children can get in touch with their own internal sensations, including the vestibular, proprioceptive and interoception. The workshop will explore using natural components to process trauma. Using historical traditions can assist in healing. For instance, planting lilacs when a woman miscarried or an infant died allowed for healing rituals within nature. Growing plants used by cultures for healing rituals can allow for deep discussion and healing. Ethical concerns including informed consent will be identified and decision-making related to ethics will be discussed. Outdoor spaces, including Healing Gardens, will be discussed. How to develop Healing Gardens including labyrinths, considering therapy and healing, will be discussed. Incorporating nature play into indoor settings will be explored.
