Description

This is an in person only class.

Use of the organ in services—awe-inspiring or heresy? Guitar from the bimah—accessible or profane? Music has an unparalleled power to convene and cohere people together. Its power used throughout history as an agent of societal change, at times inspiring shock and outrage before, finally, moving people to acceptance of new norms. In this two-session course, we will take a trip through the musical history of American Judaism, looking at the ebbs and flows of our musical traditions. What are the elements that, though acceptable now, were heretical a generation ago? When and how were our sacred music traditions created? Moreover, where are they headed?
