San Miguel PEN presents... Jennifer Clement

The Promised Party: Kahlo, Basquiat and Me

Come hear acclaimed author Jennifer Clement present and read from The Promised Party: Kahlo, Basquiat and Me, her memoir and tale of two fabulous cities: Mexico  and New York. From her bohemian childhood—next door to Frida Kahlo’s house, surrounded by artists, communists, revolutionaries and poets—to New York’s burgeoning counter-culture scene—with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and William Burroughs—Clement recreates the danger, fury and ecstasy that made ’70s Mexico City and ’80s New York two of the world’s greatest places to be young, free and alive. Clement will also recount how, as president of PEN International, she led the creation of the renowned Women’s Manifesto and two other key manifestos.

About the Venue

San Miguel PEN Presents Winter Series will take place at JC3, Jewish Cultural & Community Center, located in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato—the perfect place for conversations of such profound importance.

She is President Emerita of PEN International—the only woman to hold the office, she led the creation of the renowned Women’s Manifesto and two other key manifestos.
