San Miguel PEN presents... Suzanna Dworsky
Defamation: A Death Knell for Freedom of the Press
In the US, civil defamation lawsuits enable people to defend their good name against false statements made about them. What happens to First Amendment rights of free speech when the government or powerful individuals use defamation suits to harass, intimidate, and silence journalists? In this fascinating presentation, lawyer and San Miguel resident Suzanna Dworsky will compare civil defamation lawsuits to the internationally condemned use of criminal defamation laws to prosecute and jail journalists. She’ll review some US Supreme Court decisions and explore the shaky, politicized grounds on which the free press can defend itself against weaponized defamation suits.
