San Miguel PEN presents... Soco Aguilar

Más Mexicana que el mole: My Life as a Filmmaker

As a filmmaker and scriptwriter, I understand that life is a series of experiences and turning points, each presenting an opportunity to craft a unique narrative. I'm eager to share the pivotal moments that have shaped my journey and helped define my identity as a storyteller. Much like filmmaking, life teaches us the art of turning challenges into creative opportunities, transforming limones into cinematic limonada. Join me as I reflect on these transformative moments, exploring how they have influenced my perspective on storytelling and propelled me forward to become más Mexicana que el mole. Let's delve into the essence of resilience, adaptation, and the power of narrative twists that breathe life into our personal stories and the films we create.

About the Venue

San Miguel PEN Presents Winter Series will all take place at Casa de La Cultura, located in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. This location provides the perfect backdrop for conversations of such profound importance.

About the Speaker

Soco Aguilar offers a unique perspective earned from 25 years as a successful filmmaker and documentary television producer working from San Francisco, Mexico City, and San Miguel de Allende. She is best known for producing the animated feature, La Leyenda de la Nahuala (2007), winner of Mexico’s equivalent of the Oscar, the Mexican Academy of Film’s Ariel Award for Best Animated Production. Soco is from Mexico City and worked in San Francisco for nine years as a documentary television producer for WGBH Boston, PBS’s Frontline, BBC, Partridge Films, and Discovery, and as an award-winning producer. In 2020, The New Yorker named Portillo’s “The Devil Never Sleeps,” Soco’s first major film project, as one of the top 62 films that have shaped documentary films. She is currently working on producing her most recent screenplay, If You Want to be Loved, Love, a story about a social influencer who travels back in time to 1994 to uncover the truth about her parents’ murders—a conspiracy connected to the assassination of a popular Mexican presidential candidate—and is forced to choose between two different worlds and two different lives.

Why Attend?
